Last weekend I had the opportunity to check off one of the goofier items on my CO bucket list, peddling one of those rolling bike bars I often see roll past me in LoDo. As the group of friends participating were mostly Boulder based, we rode with My Handle Bar in Boulder.
My group of 16 peddled furiously around Pearl Street, hopping from bar to bar. You feel a bit silly, but that’s all part of the fun, so make sure to gather a group of friends that’s not afraid to be silly and rock out (and sing out) to your favorite music. The only disappointment in the entire experience is that the bar can no longer serve from its on-board keg tap, so bring some water to tide you over until you get to the next bar. (Note – this may not apply in the Denver based bike bars, so be sure to ask first.) Our on-the-fly stops of Bohemian Beirgarten, Rio Grande, and Aji were able to accommodate our large walk-in group; if you want to pick your own bar stops make sure they are prepared for your group size.
By far my favorite part of the whole experience was the reaction of everyone on the street. People cheered, took pictures, we were videotaped by passing cars. All heads turn with bemused experiences when you roll by on this thing rocking major 80’s hits.
I would definitely recommend trying it at least once, but take note, it’s a lot more effort to pedal than you would think it is. Not everyone peddles at once, you need at least 8 to effectively move it, and there are only 10 pedal seats available. Fully loaded with our group of 16, the poor group members that had the pedal seats on the first uphill leg were feeling it, and very much looking forward to that first beer stop.
